Carmen Mountain Whitetail Hunts in Mexico

The Carmen Mountain Whitetail is probably the least known of the Whitetail sub-species. Hunting Carmen Mountain Whitetail is comparable to hunting Coues Deer in the Sonoran Desert, but these diminutive little whitetails are only found in isolated pockets in West Texas and in the Northern End of Coahuila in the Sierra Del Carmen’s and the Del Burros in Mexico.

I’ve got 500,000 contiguous acres in the Sierra Del Carmen’s with some of the most pristine Carmen Mountain Whitetail habitat you’ll ever find and more Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer than you’ll see anywhere else.  The ranch headquarters sits at 3500’ and the top of the mountain is at 9,000’.  The terrain varies greatly from the high desert floor to the thick pine forest. This ranch is in the heart of prime Carmen Mountain Whitetail country with extremely low hunting pressure.

Typically, no more than 10 Carmen Mountain Whitetail are harvested each year, making the trophy quality second to none and shot opportunities plentiful.  The meals and accommodations are 5 star and the entire ranch staff is very friendly and super helpful.  Flying to/from the ranch, which is about a 45 min flight, makes the trip easy, enjoyable and very safe.  Airports in Mexico are very safe and being on the ranch is very safe, so by limiting our time on the ground to the airport in Acuña and while hunting on the ranch this hunt is very safe and a great adventure!

Carmen Mountain Whitetail – Who is this hunt for:

Hunting Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer in the mountain range where they were first identified, the Sierra Del Carmens, is something every hunter should experience at least once in their lives.  When you hunt Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer on this ranch, it’s more than just a hunt, it’s an adventure!

All of my Carmen Mountain Whitetail hunts are done from a high rack in the back of a pickup truck.  These high racks have a comfortable bench seat with plenty of storage space for your gear/clothing, as well as a padded shooting rail.  The roads around the ranch are kept in good condition, but they are ranch roads and can be bumpy at times.

I hunt the Carmen Mountain Whitetail in late December through mid/late January to coincide with the rut.  Because we hunt the rut, the shots are typically not more than 250 yards.  Since we spend most of our time hunting out of the truck, and with shots that are well within most hunters’ comfortable range, this hunt is great for the novice hunter or the experienced hunter that may not be as agile as before. This hunt is also perfect for the species collector (the Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer is one of the 5 new subspecies eligible for the SCI record book) looking for a great adventure hunt or anyone in between.

Carmen Mountain Whitetail – Animal Specifics

Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer was first described by Goldman and Kellogg in 1940.  These diminutive little deer are found in isolated pockets in West Texas and in Northern Coahuila, Mexico.  They are a very similar grey color to the whitetail more commonly found in Texas, but they have a bushier, all whitetail that fans out when spooked, giving them the “fantail” nickname.

Mature bucks weigh around 100lbs and typically sport 8-10 point racks.  These little deer are typically found from 4500’ to the top of the mountain, 9,000’.  Carmen Mountain Whitetail deer rut from mid-late December to mid-late January.

Hunting Carmen Mountain Whitetail

Since my Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer hunts are on a 500,000-acre ranch, all of these hunts are done out of a vehicle.  This country is so big, and I have so many Carmen Mountain Whitetail, that without the vehicle this hunt would be almost impossible.  If I have hunters that would like to walk/still hunt I’ve got plenty of country and can easily accommodate that as well.

Like most animals during the rut, these Carmen Mountain Whitetail are more concerned with the hot doe they are after than vehicles or people.  This allows us to get good looks at numerous Carmen Mountain Whitetail bucks and really pick out a great trophy.

A typical day hunting Carmen Mountain Whitetail begins before sunrise with coffee, juice, and a great hot breakfast prepared for us by the camp cook.  After breakfast, we load our gear in the trucks and start heading up the mountain to begin glassing/hunting just as it gets light enough to see.  We typically hunt all day taking a break for a wonderful lunch on the mountain, prepared and packed for us by the cook.  After lunch, we are back to hunting the rest of the afternoon.  If we are close enough to camp, we will return for lunch and then head back to the mountain for the afternoon hunt.  After a full day of hunting, we return to HQ in time for a few cocktails and another wonderful meal prepared by the cook.

The ranch rifles are all chambered in 30-06, which is more than adequate for these little whitetails, but if you think you might want to take a longer shot or would like to use your own rifle that can easily be arranged as well.  This hunt is truly an adventure and these little Carmen Mountain Whitetail are a blast to hunt and they make a wonderful trophy!

Carmen Mountain Deer Hunting – Packing List

Since we fly/in out of the ranch, weight is always a consideration.  There is laundry service available at the ranch HQ, so packing multiple sets of clothing is not that necessary.  With the huge elevation change from the desert floor to the top of the mountain, and since we are hunting from high racks in the back of pickup trucks, you are going to want to dress in layers.  I prefer to wear wool when hunting in the mountains, but if you like synthetic that will work also.

“Cotton kills” in the mountains, so leave the cotton at home unless you plan to wear it around camp. The days are typically warm but the mornings/evenings can get pretty cold, especially in the high rack with no shelter from the wind.

Here’s my suggested packing list:
