OVERVIEW
In Texas, most Mouflon sheep are crossed with Corsican sheep. These hybrid sheep have inferior horns and genetics, and in turn, cost much less than pure European Mouflon. My hunts are for pure European Mouflon.
My Mouflon hunts are on my 3600 acre ranch outside of Mountain Home, Texas. This ranch consistently produces trophy rams with horns that typically range in size between 25-35 inches, with the occasional 38+ inch mouflon ram hitting the ground. The biggest one I’ve ever killed was a giant that had one horn that was over 45 inches with the other at 36 inches. That ram was the new #4 in the world for Trophy Game Record (TGR).
Mouflon are classified as an exotic in Texas and there is no closed season. You can find good trophies year round.

WHO, HOW, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE
WHO ARE THESE HUNTS FOR?
There’s more than one way to approach a Mouflon sheep hunt. One approach is geared for more experienced hunters who are physically fit, and the other is geared to novice hunters, or hunters who aren’t comfortable walking distances across rocky terrain.
Because of these options, I can accommodate hunters with a wide range of experience. This hunt is a good choice for everybody.
HOW WE HUNT MOUFLON SHEEP
Depending on your experience level, we can either shoot from sticks or we can shoot from a blind. Experienced hunters will enjoy tracking the sheep cross country and shooting from sticks. Less experienced hunters (or hunters who aren’t comfortable walking distances across rocky terrain) will shoot from a blind. In the blind, we wait for the sheep to come to us and take our shots from that more controlled environment.
A typical hunting day starts before daylight with a quick breakfast, and then we’re off to start the hunt. Late morning we’ll break for brunch/lunch, after which we’ll hunt until late afternoon or early evening. After getting back to camp for the night, we’ll have a hearty, hot-off-the grill dinner and a relaxing evening before heading to bed.
It’s worth noting that I don’t have a big camp where you will be in a lodge with a bunch of people you don’t know. When you hunt with me, you or your group have exclusive rights to the ranch for lodging and hunting.
ABOUT MOUFLON SHEEP
Mouflon are a subspecies group of the wild sheep and are thought to be the ancestor for all modern domestic sheep. In 2001, Mouflon became the first endangered mammal clone to survive infancy.
Both male and female Mouflon have horns, but the horns on the male are much larger. The horns curve back over their head and typically drop down below their jaw before curving back up towards their chin. Unlike most other wild sheep, the horns on pure Mouflon don’t flare out at the end. The size of the horns typically determines the hierarchy within the herd.
Mouflon have reddish-brown flanks with dark back stripes and a white saddle patch in the center of the body. They don’t need much water, but will drink several times a day in hot weather. Despite being fairly aggressive towards each other, Mouflon are almost always found in herds.
WHEN AND WHERE WE HUNT MOUFLON SHEEP
There is no closed season on hunting Mouflon, but the best time to do it is during the rut, between October and January.
Mouflon can be found in the Texas Hill Country, Edwards Plateau, South Texas, and even in a few of the mountain ranges in West Texas. I do my hunts on my 3600 acres ranch outside of Mountain Home, Texas. This ranch always has very pure genetics and consistently produces trophy Mouflon rams.
If you traveling by air to Texas, San Antonio International Airport is the closest major airport, and from there it’s typically a 2-hour drive to my ranch.

The weather in Texas can be unpredictable, and change quickly and abruptly. Make sure to check the weather forecast and pack appropriately.
Generally, summers are very hot, winters can get quite raw (especially in West Texas), and summer and fall days often have huge temperature swings with cold evenings, nights and mornings, and warm or hot afternoons.
For most hunts, prepare to dress in layers so you can add or take off clothing as temperatures shift throughout the day. For warm weather hunts, pack clothes that breathe, are well ventilated, and keep the sun off of you. For mountain hunts, avoid cotton — wool or synthetic works best.
For hunts in the late spring, summer and early fall, Sawyer Products Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent is invaluable. We do a lot of walking through tall grass, and chiggers and ticks can be a problem. With Sawyer Permethrin you don’t have to worry about them. It's sprayed on your clothing and once it dries it’s odorless and colorless. I LOVE this product, and literally never leave home without it!
And one last - but very important - note: Do NOT wear new boots! Make sure your boots are well broken in!
