Best Mouflon Hunting in Texas
Mouflon sheep in Texas are typically crossed with Corsican sheep, but if you’re looking for pure European mouflon you’ve come to the right place! The hybrid mouflon sheep have inferior horns, and genetics, and in turn cost much less than pure European mouflon.
I hunt my pure European mouflon on my 3600 acres ranch outside of Mountain Home, TX. This ranch always has very pure genetics and consistently produces trophy mouflon rams with 25-35” horns, with the occasional 38” + mouflon ram hitting the ground. The biggest mouflon ram I’ve ever killed was a giant that had one horn that was over 45” and the other horn was 36”, which made him the new #4 in the world for Trophy Game Records (TGR). Since mouflon are horned animals (not antlers, so they don’t shed) and there is no closed season, you can find good trophies 12 months out of the year.
Most of my mouflon hunting is done by a combination of safari style hunting and spot and stalk hunting, but I will also hunt out of blinds as necessary.
Mouflon Sheep Hunting Texas – Who is this hunt for:
Mouflon are considered an “exotic” in Texas and there’s no closed season on hunting exotics in Texas. The mouflon typically rut from October through December, but if you can’t make it for a rut hunt we can still find you a nice trophy mouflon ram year round.
Depending on your experience level, we can either shoot using shooting sticks or from a blind. Experienced hunters will enjoy the thrill shooting off of shooting sticks after tracking your mouflon cross country. For hunters with less experience or hunters who are not comfortable walking longer distances across rocky terrain, we can post up in a blind. We will wait there for the mouflon to come to us and take a shot from a much more controlled environment. With a wide variety of hunting methods, I can accommodate a wide range of hunters.

Mouflon Hunts – Animal Specifics:
Mouflon are a subspecies group of the wild sheep and are thought to be the ancestor for all modern domestic sheep. In 2001 mouflon became the first endangered mammal clone to survive infancy. Male mouflon are called rams and female mouflon are called ewes. Both sexes of mouflon have horns, but the horns on the male mouflon are much larger than those of the female. The horns on the mouflon curve back over their head and typically drop down below their jaw before curving back up towards their chin. Unlike most other wild sheep, the horns on pure mouflon don’t flare out at the end. The size of the horns typically determines the hierarchy within the herd.
Mouflon have reddish-brown flanks with dark back stripes and a white saddle patch in the center of body. Mouflon don’t need much water, but will drink several times a day in hot weather. Despite being fairly aggressive towards each other, mouflon are almost always found in herds.
Mouflon Hunting Texas:
Most of my mouflon hunting is done with a combination of safari-style hunting and spot and stalk. We drive around until we locate a nice mouflon ram, and then try and stalk into position for a shot. With a lot of my mouflon hunting occurring in the Fall/Winter months, when natural food sources are more scarce, I’ll also hunt out of blinds overlooking feeders or a natural food source.
A typical day mouflon hunting begins before daylight with a quick easy breakfast of coffee, fruit, pastries and breakfast bars. After breakfast, we load up in my Jeep and head out looking for a big mouflon ram. I’m a big fan of letting my hunters look over numerous mouflon rams so they can get a good idea of which one they would like to go after.
Mouflon are most active in the morning and the afternoon so we typically head back to the lodge for a hearty brunch/lunch mid-day. Early in the afternoon, we’re back in the Jeep looking for more mouflon until we find the trophy ram you’re after. If we’re hunting out of a blind, we head to the blind early in the afternoon in time to let everything settle down for the afternoon hunt. If we’re trying to spot/stalk mouflon, once we locate the mouflon ram you’re after, we grab the shooting sticks and the stalk begins. After a full day of chasing mouflon, we head back to the lodge for a great dinner hot off the grill and the chance to re-live the day’s events before heading to bed to do it all again the next day.
Mouflon Hunting Packing List:
Please note that some of these links are affiliate links and I earn a small commission – at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products that I use myself and found to be useful.
You can hunt mouflon 12 months out of the year in Texas, so the weather will vary greatly throughout the course of the year. If your mouflon hunt is in the spring or summer it’s going to be warm/hot, so you will want clothes that breathe and are well ventilated and keep the sun off of you. If you’re hunting mouflon in the fall & winter it’s going to be much colder and you are going to want to dress in layers so you can dress and undress as the temperature and activity levels dictate.
For my hunts in the late spring, summer, and early fall (Axis, Blackbuck, late-season Turkey, early-season Elk, etc) one of the products I’ve found to be extremely important is Sawyer Products Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent.
We spend a lot of time walking/stalking through tall grass and with Sawyer Permethrin I don’t have to worry about getting chiggers or ticks on me. You spray it on your clothing, and once it dries it’s odorless and colorless. Chiggers itch so bad that they can really ruin a hunt, but with Sawyer Permethrin you don’t have to worry. I LOVE this product, and literally never leave home without it!
Here’s my suggested packing list:
- Valid TX hunting license
- Rain gear
- Backpack – a water bladder in your pack is helpful
- Comfortable boots/shoes
- Snake boots (I typically wear snake boots to keep the cactus/thorns/brush off my legs)
- Jeans/Pants/Insulated Overalls (Lighter weight pants for the Spring/Summer and heavier weight for the Fall/Winter)
- Camo shirts: Long Sleeve Shirts & Insulated Long Sleeve Shirts (I really love these KUIU shirts!)
- Hunting Gloves
- Insect Repellent Sawyer Permethrin
- Rifle & Ammo or Bow & Arrows
- Uninsulated & Insulated underwear
- Kuiu Socks and Darn tough Hiker Micro Crew Cushion socks are my favorite. They last close to forever!
- Comfortable camp clothes
- Personal Toiletries & Medicines
