OVERVIEW
The Carmen Mountain Whitetail is probably the least known of the Whitetails. Hunting these animals is comparable to hunting Coues Deer in the Sonoran Desert. These little Whitetails, though, are only found in isolated pockets of West Texas and in northern Coahuila, Mexico.
Typically, I don’t harvest more than ten Carmen Mountain Whitetail in a year. That means the trophy quality is second to none, and the shot opportunities are plentiful.
Hunting Carmen Mountain Whitetail in the mountain range where they were first identified — the Sierra Del Carmens, Mexico — is something every hunter should experience at least once. I’ve got 500,000 contiguous acres there with some of the most pristine Carmen Mountain Whitetail habitat you’ll ever find. It has more Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer than you’ll see anywhere else. Hunting these deer on this ranch is more than a hunt — it’s an experience of a lifetime and an adventure!

WHO THESE HUNTS ARE FOR
My Carmen Mountain Whitetail hunts are for hunters of all experience levels and for folks that may not be in peak physical condition.
I hunt the Carmen Mountain Whitetail in late December through mid to late January to coincide with the rut. Like most animals during the rut, these bucks are more concerned with the hot doe they are after than they are with vehicles or people. That has multiple advantages: the shots are typically not more than 250 yards, we get good looks at numerous bucks, and we can pick out a great trophy.
Since we hunt out of the truck, and take shots that are well within most hunters’ comfortable range, this hunt is great for the novice hunter or the experienced hunter who may not be as agile as before.
This hunt is also perfect for the species collector (the Carmen Mountain Whitetail Deer is one of the five new subspecies eligible for the SCI record book).
HOW WE HUNT CARMEN MOUNTAIN WHITETAIL
My Carmen Mountain Whitetail hunts are done from a high rack in the back of a pickup truck. These high racks have a comfortable bench seat with plenty of storage space, and a padded shooting rail. Because this country is so big, this hunt would be almost impossible without the vehicle. I can, however, accommodate hunters who also want to mix in walk/still hunting.
The ranch rifles are all chambered in 30-06, which is more than adequate for these little Whitetails. If you want to take a longer shot or use your own rifle, though, we can accommodate that too. (There's an added charge -- usually about $350 -- to bring and use your own rifle.)
A typical hunting day starts before daylight with a quick breakfast, and then we’re off to start the hunt. Late morning we’ll break for brunch/lunch, after which we’ll hunt until late afternoon or early evening. After getting back to camp for the night, we’ll have a hearty, chef-prepared dinner and a relaxing evening before heading to bed.
It’s worth noting that I don’t have a big camp where you will be in a lodge with a big crowd. On most of my hunts, you've got the ranch entirely to yourself. For the Carmen Mountain hunts, because of the logistics, it's a bit different. For these hunts in Mexico, I usually bring five or six hunters. Everybody gets a private room.
ABOUT CARMEN MOUNTAIN WHITETAIL
Carmen Mountain Whitetail are a grey color, very similar to the whitetail found in Texas. They have a bushier, all white tail that fans out when spooked (giving them the 'fantail' nickname).
Mature bucks weigh about 100 pounds and typically sport eight to ten point racks.
These little deer are typically found from an elevation of 4500 feet to the top of the mountain, at 9,000 feet. Carmen Mountain Whitetail deer rut from mid to late December to mid to late January.
WHEN AND WHERE WE HUNT CARMEN MOUNTAIN WHITETAIL
I offer Carmen Mountain Whitetail hunts in late December through mid January to coincide with the rut.
The ranch where we do these hunts is 500,000 of contiguous acres in the Sierra Del Carmens, in Northern Coahuila Mexico. It is about 75 minutes South of Boquillas, Coahuila. The ranch headquarters sits at an elevation of 3500 feet. The top of the mountain is at 9,000 feet. The terrain varies greatly from the high desert floor to the thick pine forest. This ranch is in the heart of prime Carmen Mountain Whitetail country with extremely low hunting pressure.
For those hesitant about traveling to Mexico, the meals and accommodations are 5 star and the entire ranch staff is very friendly and helpful. The trip is easy, enjoyable and very safe.
We'll meet up in Marathon and drive to Boquillas, where we'll cross the river in a boat. From there, we'll take a truck to the ranch.
If traveling by air, fly into the Midland/Odessa or El Paso airport and rent a car to drive to Marathon.
PACKING LIST

The weather in northern Mexico can be unpredictable, and change quickly and abruptly. Make sure to check the weather forecast and pack appropriately.
Generally, summers are very hot, winters can get quite raw (especially in West Texas), and summer and fall days often have huge temperature swings with cold evenings, nights and mornings, and warm or hot afternoons.
For most hunts, prepare to dress in layers so you can add or take off clothing as temperatures shift throughout the day. For warm weather hunts, pack clothes that breathe, are well ventilated, and keep the sun off of you. For mountain hunts, avoid cotton — wool or synthetic works best.
For hunts in the late spring, summer and early fall, Sawyer Products Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent is invaluable. We do a lot of walking through tall grass, and chiggers and ticks can be a problem. With Sawyer Permethrin you don’t have to worry about them. It's sprayed on your clothing and once it dries it’s odorless and colorless. I LOVE this product, and literally never leave home without it!
And one last - but very important - note: Do NOT wear new boots! Make sure your boots are well broken in!
